Two utilization management programs which offer the greatest potential for savings while promoting clinically appropriate use are prior authorization and step therapy. Three-quarters of respondents had a prior authorization program, similar to 2010, but 18% did not know if prior authorization was used. Similar to 2010, step therapy was used by 56% of respondents for one or more therapy classes while 26% of respondents were unsure whether they offered step therapy.
