In 2011, 90% of employers offer access to a mail-service pharmacy to dispense maintenance medications used to treat chronic conditions (Figure 10). Only 18% of employers had mandatory mail, which requires maintenance medications to be dispensed by a mail-service pharmacy after one to three fills at retail. Twenty-six percent of carve-out plans have mandatory mail compared to 9% of carve-in plans (p<.05).
