Use of coinsurance continues to grow, representing 34% of plan designs in 2011 (Figure 9). Copay increases were relatively flat from 2010 to 2011, with the exception of specialty tiers, which grew by 37%. The differential between tiers continues to grow over time, averaging $20 between preferred and nonpreferred and $16 between generic and preferred brands in 2011.
