The average annual increase in drug cost expenditures reported in 2009 was 4.4%. The range of drug cost savings was 1% to 24%, while the range of cost increases was .03% to 43.4%. This range is broad because of the varying sizes, plan designs, and clinical programs used by the survey respondents.
Generic dispensing rates have increased in both retail and mail since 2008 as shown in Table 42. The range of generic dispensing rates (Table 43) continues to expand as more generic drugs become available for medications commonly used by the ambulatory population covered by commercially insured drug benefit plans.
