Mail Coinsurance

   Minimize

Mail coinsurance amounts are a percentage of the total cost of the prescription (not including rebate). Increased access to the mail-service pharmacies through the internet using member portals and mobile applications has made implementation of mail coinsurance simpler and less confusing for members as the cost of mail-service prescriptions can be calculated before members have to order and pay for prescriptions. In 2011, the average coinsurance was lowest for generics at 23% and highest for lifestyle drugs at 64% (Table 21). Unlike retail coinsurance, some of the drug categories experienced increases in coinsurance rate in 2011, including brand drugs (in a two-tier designs), lifestyle drugs, and specialty drugs (Table 22).
